STHS

- Migration
of plataform: from Win32/Intel to Linux

3. Platforms Migration
Many
enterprises have already realized how much the expenses with licenses
are increasing. For example, a simple office solution based on the
packet MS Windows XP + MS Office will cost about U$199,00 +
U$679,00. In other words, approximately U$900,00 only of software.
This without counting any other specific software and equipment, in
general, necessary to execute these packets.
Some
tendentious analyses makes the client believe that the change to free
softwares is always advantageous. This, unfortunately, is not true.
There are several costs that must be taken into account, such as:
specialist systems used, data exchange with other enterprises through
formats owners, necessary technical support, and the most important
thing: analysis of the cost of training the employees. Other
analyses, also tendentious, point to the apposed way, that the MS
solution is the cheapest because it reduces the costs with training
and support. This, also, is not always true. In fact, each case must
be analysed fairly with its advantages and disadvantages.
STHS
helps its clients in the discerning analysis of viability of adoption
of alternative systems, in general based on free software. Including:
- Case
study of the client
- Analysis
of its platforms and softwares
- Analysis
of the domain of the company employees
- Fair
report containing the reduction of costs (when it is the case) with
the expenses of license and additional cost (when it exists) with
support and people
- Migration,
implantation and training of employees when the viability is checked
- Cost
of development of specialists/owners softwares for the new platforms
In
some cases the analysis can show that the migration must be done in a
gradual way. In such cases, the specialists softwares can be carried
firstly to the new platform and only a few stations migrate so that
tests and training can be performed. The other stations will change
according to the experience with the users. If they show themselves
familiarized with the change, we can promote the knowledge. Or, it's
still possible to develop the specialists softwares with platform
independence (multiplatform), so the migration will be much more
gentle.
